
Kerry Sloane Bassett has extensive experience litigating and negotiating family law and criminal law cases in Suffolk County, including custody and visitation issues, neglect petitions, child support enforcement and collection, termination of parental rights, and domestic violence matters. She has litigated cases in all five boroughs, Nassau and Suffolk Counties, the Appellate Division of the State of New York, and the New York Court of Appeals. Ms. Bassett was one of a handful of appellate attorneys to work on the People v. LaValle, the Court of Appeals case that overturned the death penalty in New York State.
In addition to practicing law, Ms. Bassett is an Assistant Adjunct Professor at Stony Brook University where she teaches Gender Issues and the Law, an undergraduate pre-law class that examines the role of gender and sex in matrimonial, family, and criminal law.
Ms. Bassett is a member of the Suffolk Bar Association, the Suffolk County Womens Bar Association, and the Suffolk County Criminal Bar Association.
Ms. Bassett graduated from the State University of New York with a double major in Art History and Political Science. She was awarded the graduating senior "Martin Travis Award" in Political Science, and completed an Honors Thesis entitled, "Prospects for Conflict Resolution in Northern Ireland." Ms. Bassett graduated from Hofstra University School of Law in 2000.
